The Old Pros |
As the decade came to a close, the best-known British performers of the sixties continued to redefine themselves. They were confronted with a dizzying array of new styles that had seized fans, from the emergence of country rock to the increasingly sophisticated experiments in prog rock, to a fundamental rock 'n' roll revival. These stylistic turnings embroiled the internal social dynamics of bands as different members desired to go in their chosen directions. |
Perhaps the four most important groups to weather the sixties—the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Who—found themselves attempting to contain internal divisions in artistic vistion and personal space. In some cases, they found a way to return to their roots. In other instances, they pursued visions they had attempted earlier. |
