Ray Davies originally
conceived of Arthur as a score for a TV musical written in
collaboration with Julian Mitchell. The story is about Arthur Morgan
("a plain simple man in a plain simple working-class position")
and his family as his son and daughter-in-law prepare to leave for
Australia. |
Ray Davies’ has continued his commentary on London and
English life, as an anti-industrial establishment and pro-working
class author. Identifying the hero of the story with the name of
a mythical king adds intensity to his sense of loss of British identity. Underlying Davies inspiration, his sister and her husband had moved their family to Australia. |
