Thumri, "Prem ke mār katār...," in rāg Sohni and tāl Dīpcandī
Odeon MOAE 5005
Ghulam Ali Khan (1903-1968) was one of the foremost musicians of the early twentieth century whose musicianship influenced the current senior generation of Indian musicians. Although he excelled in khayāl, many musicians fondly remember his ṭhumrī performances for his ability to interpret the emotions of the text.
In this brief performance (originally recorded for a 78 rpm disk), he introduces the principal melody in the typical sthā'ī-antarā form, performs several verses, playing with the words (bolbanāo) and closes with a laggi section.

Prem Ke Mār Katār
Prem ke mār katār; Cut by the love knife;
Saiyyāñ javat, kaise bīte. Lover gone, cannot go on.
Prem ki bāzi men saṅg khele; Played in the game of love together;
ham hare, tum jīte. We lost, you won.

Rāg Sohni
Bhatkhande (1969, 3:404) ascribes rāg Sohni to Mārwā ṭhāṭ (tīvra madhyama and komal ṛiṣabh) with pañcam omitted. He designates dhaivat as the vādi and gandhār as the samvādi. Bhatkhande also observes that the upper tonic (sā) has a special role in this rāg and that ṛiṣabh is often avoided in ascent. Rāg Sohni is described as best heard late at night.
