MU 309: An examination of the major musical
phenomena of the Indian subcontinent and their historical and cultural
background. Topics include Hindustani and Karnatak classical musical
styles, religious music, popular music, and selected regional genres. |
Course goals:

to understand the principle concepts and genres of the
Hindustani and Karnatak classical music traditions. |

to recognize key compositional and performance
techniques associated with the classical traditions. |

to be able to place the musical practices
of South Asia in their societal and cultural contexts. |
