Assembled by Pete Townshend around Newman, a former postal employee with a penchant for tone clusters. Townshend pulled together McCulloch (best known then for performing with a family musical ensemble) and Keen (ex roadie for John Mayall, chauffeur for Townshend, and aspiring songwriter having composed "Armenia City in the Sky" for The Who Sell Out).
