Michael Giles, Pete Giles (bass), and Robert Fripp form the original version of this band in Bournemouth as "Giles, Giles, and Fripp."
 
1968
June. "One in a Million" / "Newly Weds" (Deram)
Giles, Giles and Fripp recruit Ian McDonald and begin working with Pete Sinfield. Judy Dyble (from Fairport Convention) guests.
September. The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp. (Deram)
September. "Thursday Morning" / "Elephant Song" (Deram)
Late Fall. Fripp, McDonald, and Michael Giles begin talking with Greg Lake about forming a new band.
 
1969
13 January. King Crimson begin rehearsing in the basement of the Fulham Palace Cafe, London.
24 March. Begin work on In the Court of the Crimson King.
9 April. King Crimson debut at the London Speakeasy
11 April. King Crimson open for T Rex at the Lyceum, London
6 May. King Crimson begin recording at Maida Vale Studios. They later will also record at Morgan Studios and Wessex Studios.
May. Performances in London at the Lyceum, Speak Easy, Country Club, Marquee, and the Revolution. They also peform at the Van Dyke Club in Plymouth. Fripp decides he wants to perform sitting on a stool. Lake objects, but relents.
June. Performances in London at the Marquee, and the Revolution. They also peform at the Ewell Technical College, the Old Granary in Bristle, and at Oxford University.
5 July. King Crimson open for the newly reformed Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. They also perform this month at Goldsmith College (today Regent's College) and at the Marquee Club.
9 August. Plumpton Festival
20 August. King Crimson finish recording In the Court of the Crimson King at Maida Vale Studios.
10 October: In the Court of the Crimson King (Island ILPS 9111)
