Manfred Lubowitz leaves South Africa both as protest against apartheid and in an attempt to find better musical work in London as Manfred Mann. (He takes his last name from the LA jazz drummer, Shelly Manne.)
1962  [MM 21-22; MH 19-20]
Summer: Hugg hires Mann to fill in with his jazz quartet playing summer camps.
December: Hugg and Mann form Manfred-Hugg Blues Menn (and, for a while, "... Blues Brothers") which originally includes a horn section.

May: The band drops its horn section, signs with HMV (EMI), and change their name to Manfred Mann. John Burgess becomes their producer.

The producers of the television show, Ready Steady Go ask Mann to write theme music for their popular show. Drawing off the popularity of space launches, they contribute "5-4-3-2-1."

The band continues to change personnel and have hits through the end of the sixties at which point, Manfred Mann disbands the ensemble. Today he tours with one band and the others tour by themselves.
