1961
The origins of this group lies in Allan Clarke (vocals) and Graham Nash (vocals and guitar), who began playing as Everly Brothers imitators, the Two Teens, in their native Manchester.
With the addition of Eric Haydock (bass), Don Rathbone (drums), and eventually, Tony Hicks (guitar) they began an evolution that eventually led to the Hollies (named after Buddy Holly).

1963
In January (shortly after the Beatles had released "Please, Please Me"), while the Hollies were performing at the Cavern Club, Ron Richards from Parlophone heard them and added them to that company's growing list of beat groups. Parlophone was ahead of the pack of producers and managers who would soon descend on the North. Like many other groups with northern associations, their earliest releases were covers of American r&b tunes. These were top-ten releases in the United Kingdom this year, but they made little headway in the US, the "big" market and the goal of most performers.
