This was Kidd's last significant hit and reflects the growing influence of the beat groups of 1963. The opening and closing chord sequence proclaims this to take a new approach to tonality. The doubled vocal with harmonized line endings echoes not only the growing influence of the Beatles, but also the American girl groups that had influenced them. However, the strongest influence is in the emphasized relationship between the bass drum and the bass and in the recorded quality of the guitar. |
The song has an extended verse-verse-chorus-verse format. After the introduction (including a few measures in tempo) we hear two 16-measure verses. Bridge material takes the tonal center and mood to the new area of the chorus that then ends up segueing back into the verse. A guitar solo based on the verse marks the end of this opening verse-verse-chorus-verse section. The song is capped by a restatement of the chorus and verse with a short coda consisting of an extension of the vocal harmonies at the end of the verse and the opening chord sequence. |
Kidd and his producer were attempting to make the transition from a Teddy Boy favorite to beat sensation. However, the short-lived success of this recording betrayed his fatal flaw: he was a vestige of pre-Beatles rock and British fans were ready for the future, not the past. |

I'll
never get over you, no I'll never get over you; I just can't keep it a secret anymore, oh, no, no . . . . |
a |
It
wasn't so long ago, that you told me you loved me so; then you went and said goodbye and found another guy, aye, aye, aye, aye. |
b |
I
know, somewhere, someday, I'll find one love to take your place; One girl with an angel face. [But in the mean time.] |
