Rāga Ahir Bhairav
Bhatkhande (1969, 5:346-347) describes rāga Ahir Bhairav as in Bhairav ṭhāṭ and as having madhyam as it vādi and sadaj as the samvādi. Bhatkhande notes that this is a mixed rāga — that is, in the purvāṅg the rāga is Bhairav and in the uttarāṅg it is mixed with rāga Kāfi (thus komal niṣād and suddh dhaivat instead of the other way around as you would expect in a Bhairav ṭhāṭ rāga). Less easy to explain is the occasional use of śuddh riṣabh (Bhatkhande describes it as tivra riṣabh) in ascending passages. Perhaps because of these characteristics, Bhatkhande does not give an āroh-avroh shape and instead describes Ahir Bhairav with a calan (that is, how it "proceeds"). He describes the rāga as appropriate to the early morning.
This performance tends to emphasize ma and sa, but ga and re also play important roles.
