This rāg comes from Bhairavi ṭhāṭ.
Madhyam is natural (komal) while all the others are komal.
This rāg is heptatonic.
The vādi is madhyam and the samvādi is ṣaḍaj.
Some experts make dhaivat the vādi and gandhār the samvādi.
Both of these performance practices should be studied.
The ideal performance time is early morning, [but] for some, the rāg can be performed anytime.
Generally in ascent, ṛṣabh can occur several times properly with practice, but there are no prescriptions as this is willful meditation.
Ancient manuscripts describe natural ṛṣabh and this is the practice in the south.
This rāga is very popular and many sing it.
Although Bhairavī is seldom sung in khyāl, you will often hear it in gazal, ṭhumrī, tappa, and other light classical genres.
This rāg is particularly beautiful when you hear sā ga pa dha.
Singers especially give madhyam emphasis and this practice gives gandhār importance. |
