Notes and Quotes: "Honky Tonk Women"

After folding the production of The Rolling Stones' Rock 'n' Roll Circus, Jagger and Richards retreated to rural Brazil where they found the lives of the ranch workers fascinating. This song began with a more rustic acoustic country feel along the lines of Hank Williams and Jimmie Rogers. This version is usually "Country Honk." The single version evolved with the contributions of Mick Taylor.

With the introduction of Mick Taylor from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers into the band and the dismissal of Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones aim to become a touring band again. Early versions of this song locate the action in Paris, but Jagger refocues his attention on the United States with references to Memphis and New York City.
