Hopkin began her singing career with Welsh folk groups and recorded a Welsh-language EP. Her break came when she entered the popular ITV television talent contest Opportunity Knocks and won.
 
1968
The model Twiggy watched the program and brought the Welsh singer to the attention of Paul McCartney who signed her as one of the first artists to Apple Records.
