Notes and Quotes: "Black Mountain Side"
photo: Bert Jansch
Page adapts Bert Jansch's acoustic guitar version of "Black Water Side" (or "Down by Black Water Side") by adding a second guitar and tabla. [See The Best of Bert Jansch. Shanachie 99004.] (Note that Page claims the song's copyright despite the obvious copy of Jansch's tune.)
One master guitar track with tabla and overdubbed guitar solos. The meter is irregular and the drummer continually has to adjust his playing to accommodate the shifts. The general pattern of the recording is similar to that of North Indian classical music in that there is a recurring theme interspersed with at least three other ideas. In the west, such forms are generally called rondos. Jasani says he tried to anticipate what Page was about to do with limited success as Page seems not to have cared about the musical meter, or at least thought it was optional.
