Notes and Quotes:
photo: "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (sleeve)
After spending part of the winter in Rishikesh with the Beatles and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Donovan returned with a number of songs and ideas about how he wanted them to sound.
Donovan: The hurdy gurdy man is a chronicler, the hurdy gurdy man is like a bard, and the hurdy gurdy man is any singer-songwriter in any age.... Any singer for peace is a hurdy gurdy man." (Zollo)
Donovan: I told Mickie Most, "I've written this song," he recalls. He said, "What is it?" And I could never figure out what singles were and what they weren't, so I thought it was just another song I wrote. I played it through for Mickie Most, and I said, "I want to give it to Hendrix." Mickie said, "No, it's for you. It's a single." I said, "Oh? Well, alright. Well, let's get Hendrix to play on it." So, we phoned him up and he was touring, and he was not available on the time we were gonna record the song. (Goldmine)
John Paul Jones: It was me, Alan Parker on guitar, and Clem Cattini on drums. Donovan played acoustic guitar. I booked the session. (Kryk 2001)
