As Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band took over turntables, Pink Floyd released this imitation of the American West-coast psychedelic sound of bands like Quick Silver Messenger Service.
Norman Smith: Frequency control. … Yes, we did have that and I can’t give you instances now from memory, but, yeah, I did use those kinds of gimmicky things. Yes. Well of course there’s one obvious one, that was in Pink Floyd’s single, "See Emily Play," where I inserted…, but that was just ordinary double speed. Yeah, I inserted that, I can’t remember what the hell why there were, what inspired me in my head for to put that insert in. …[Piano?]… Yeah, yeah. It is a piano, and I think it might have been guitar too. A little figure that I thought of, it’s only a very simple figure and speeded it up. But, that’s the only instance I could give you. But other times, there were…, perhaps by accident, you would come across some kind of sound and think, yeah, well, that. (31 October 2001)
