The expression "like bringing coals to Newcastle" is predicated on the knowledge that Newcastle was a coal city where the dark oily rock that had miners had pried from the earth made its way to waiting ships and trains. Even further north than Liverpool, the city shared its economic condition in the post-war years marked crumbling architecture and sociey.
