This recording was originally
released on the album, Five Live Yardbirds (Epic February
1965) and gives some of the feeling of shows at this premier Soho
music club. "Too Much Monkey Business" opened their set (and opened
side A of the album) and was a vehicle for Clapton to show off his
early chops. The performance is not error free (listen to the last
notes of the very first phrase opening the performance), but we
do have an inkling of his potential. The other major forces in this
band — Samwell-Smith and Relf — hold down the other corners in this
triangular band. Berry's 12-bar blues story of a "grease monkey's"
plight was the same theme chosen by the Stones for their first Berry-cover
single. |
