Notes and Quotes: "Shapes of Things"
photo: Yardbirds (Beck)
Jeff Beck's approach to the guitar at this time was always one of experimentation. He played with new electronics. He played with different types of string. He played with the construction of his guitars. But most importantly, he played innovative melodic figures that often overshadowed the vocal melody (cf. "Over Under Sideways Down"). In "Shapes of Things," he plays fast choppy chords with feedback and fuzztone to accompany this early complaint about the ecology.
"Shapes of Things" also relies upon the shifts and tension between triple and duple subdivision of the beat. The verses have a triple subdivision of the beat. The bridge and the guitar solo, duple.
