Notes and Quotes: "Come On"
The Stones' first single was a moderate success. Their slightly cleaned up version of Chuck Berry's tale of pumping gas and keeping the car running reflects a British fascination with things American. Notable in this recording are Jones' harmonica playing and Wyman's driving plectrum bass.
Linda Leitch: I went to the first recording session for "Come One" which Andrew supposedly produced. He said to the engineer, "Right, give me the tape," and as we were walking out the guy says, "Don't you wanna mix it?" Andrew said, "Mix it? Right, yeah, okay." He didn't seem to know anything about what he was doing, but he was a con man and could talk his way into anything. I had all the old demos they did, like the Rice Krispies commercial. I should have kept them. (Oldham 2003: 234-35)
