Notes and Quotes: I'm a Man
Winwood had already established himself as a powerful pianist on their previous albums and on the previous single, "Gimme Some Lovin'," he introduced the Hammond B3 electronic organ to the sound of the SDG. Where "Gimme Some Lovin'" had relied upon a standard blues/R&B progression (I > bIII > IV > bVI), "I'm a Man" uses the same general structure, but employs a descending chromatic sequence at the end of each verse (bIII > II > bII > I).
Based on "I'm Comin' Home" (Mel Torme)
The recording, also like "Gimme Some Lovin'," has ample percussion. On "I'm a Man," the seeds of the destruction of the SDG are in the percussion provided by the band's roadies, Jim Capaldi and Dave Mason. Winwood would soon move with Capaldi, Mason, and Chris Wood to a cottage in the Bershires where they would form the band that would become Traffic.
