Davies composed
this follow-up to capitalize on the success of "You Really Got Me."
Again, Dave Davies plays the riff and Ray relies upon bar-chord
slides to establish his mood. Bobby Graham provides the solid drumming.
Ray Davies comments in his biography (101), "I had heard [Graham's]
playing on other records and was bowled over by his style and power,
which was very reminiscent of Dave Clark's drumming on all of his
hits. Graham added a tidiness and a dimension to our sound, which
had usually been dependent on the distorted fuzziness of Dave and
me palying too loud through amplifiers that were not equipped for
the volume." |
Ray Davies
(Melody Maker, 3 October): ...When I was in art school, what
I got out of it was color, expression. Now I find you turn out a
bad song for the same reason you turn out a bad painting--insincerity.
If you're sincere, if you do what you want, you can't do a bad thing
. It's time the groups got wise and did what they want to do. This
is where we are one up because even if we don't have another hit
for a year, we will have another hit. We can't lose, because we
entertain, and we're always trying to get something different. (Hinman
