One of the features of men's clothing in this era were slim pointed boots (derived from the model of American cowboy boots) with either zippers or elastic stays and, most importantly, tapered wooden heels (called "Cuban" heels). During performances of this song (or playback at the newly emerging discos) the audience would stomp their feet in time. One result was that many dance hall managers, worried about their floors and the structural integrity of their buildings, often banned the song. |
More musically problematic is the tuning of the instruments. Somehow, possibly in the playback and over-dubbing process, the track with the organ (and probably the bass) was played back more slowly and neither the producer nor the musicians seem to have been bothered enough to tune the other instruments down to that pitch. The result is an organ track that is slightly flatter than the rest of the recording. Producer Les Reed blames the pitch problem on the unreliability of the Vox Continental electronic organ. (I'm
in pieces, bits and pieces) Since you left me and you said goodbye, All I do is sit and cry, You went away and left me misery, And that's the way it'll always be. |
a |
(I'm
in pieces, bits and pieces) You said you loved me and you'd always be
mine, We'd be together 'til the end of time, Now you say it was just a game, But all you're doin' is leavin' me pain. |
b |
God
knows why it goes so slow, It just doesn't seem true, Only just a few days ago, You said you loved me, never make me blue. |
c |
Now
you've gone and I'm all alone, And you're still way up there on your throne, Enough, it seems, to end of your lie, 'Cause night is day and day is night. |
