Notes and Quotes: "Shout"

Lulu's nasal, raspy, and blues-tinged voice caught the British pop audience by surprise and quickly left other cover versions of this Isley Brothers' hit in the dust. With the success of the Beatles' version of the Isley's "Twist and Shout," "Shout" was an obvious song for other British artists to perform and record; but Lulu with producer Peter Sullivan and some of the best session musicians of the day triumphed..., at least on British charts. The recording was unsuccessful in the States.

The Isley's model was the gospel shout, ecstatic worship with tight and emotional responses between a soloist and the chorus/congregation. YouTube
