Getting a moderately
successful recording into the English charts and surmounting the
charts of the Western world was a journey that began with a variety
of steps and missteps. The first task, obviously, was to build on
their success, by recording follow-up hits that both identified
them as a marketable sound and allowed them to define the stylistic
crest. At the same time, they needed to promote their records through
touring and gaining as much media exposure as they could. All of
this required Brian Epstein to keep the business side of the venture
on an even keel. In the end, it all worked, although the financial
and personal costs were more staggering than they could possibly
have imagined. The popular hysteria dubbed "Beatlemania" did not
arise over night, but it did manifest itself much faster than almost
anyone thought it could. |
