The performance is in the same key and and has the same structure as Buddy Holly's original.
The tempo is slightly faster than the original, Lennon takes a number of liberties with the text (probably because he was unable to decipher the original), and they seem not to know how to play a B7 chord yet. Everything else about the performance shows the Quarrymen to be good imitators, George Harrison copies the guitar solo and the various breaks of Holly's original.
