Notes and Quotes: "Kon Tiki"
Kon Tiki
Named after the boat constructed by Norwegian ethnologist, Thor Heyerdahl, that he sailed west across the Pacific in 1947 (from Peru to Tuamotu) to prove possible links between the peoples of South America and Polynesia.
Unlike "Apache," this song has clear ties to vocal music. The core is in song-form (verse verse bridge verse), capped by a partial repeat of the same material (bridge verse). Variations in the music help move the performance along.
For example, when they return to the verse after the first bridge, they play the melody one octave higher and after the next bridge, they return to the original octave. The effect is to give closure to the performance, an effect enhanced by ending with roughly the same material with which they begin.
Bruce Welch (Melody Maker, 23 September 1961, p. 9): "We've improved no end since we made that record nine months ago. We were not in good form when we made it and we're surprised it has done so well."
