Notes and Quotes: "Living Doll"
Living Doll Serious Charge
Bart (Tommy Steele's friend and collaborator) betrays his musical theater interests in the modified verse-chorus organization of this song. They have organized the song into a repeated A-B-A format. Richard and the Shadows sing the first verse-chorus-verse statement. The repeat begins with Hank Marvin's guitar solo on the verse material (A) followed by the sung chorus and verse. Marvin's solo is notable as the first widely heard example of his distinctive guitar sound and playing style. Also note the prominence of the electric bass, a novelty sound at the time.
Richard made his film debut singing this song and playing the role of musician "Curley Thompson" in Serious Charge (1959). His film roles would grow and play a prominent part of his professional career.
This is the last recording on which the band appears as the Drifters. The next recording ("Travellin' Light" in October) would name them as the Shadows.
