Notes and Quotes: "Sheik of Araby"

The original 1921 version is a piano rag; however, publishers commonly produced versions for different instrument and voice combinations.

A characteristic of the Trad style is to have several other solo lines accompanying the main melody line. Different instruments take the role of maintaining the primary melody while others provide countermelody and improvisation.

The main melody is in two parts and repeats for as many variations as the band wishes to improvise. What they do not recreate is the ragtime rhythmic and structural feel of the piano version.

The tune remained in many parallel repertoires, such as this Dutch B-side release by Fats Domino in 1960. This disk illustrates the vogue around 1960 for resurrecting older songs and reinterpreting them with new instrumental forces. Ray Charles' version of "Georgia on My Mind" dates from this same era.
